The Posh is Born
Information
1934: Football has been well established in Peterborough for many years, but times had become hard and, in 1932, both Peterborough City and Fletton United clubs had ceased to exist. At a crowded meeting at the Angel Hotel on this Thursday, Peterborough United Football Club was officially voted into existence. As the previous clubs had failed due to debts, one of the first steps of the meeting - after agreeing the formation of the new club - was to cover the evening's expenses! The cost of advertising and room hire was £2 4s 6d. A collection raised £4 2s 8d. The meeting agreed on the club being formed as a limited company, with shares of 5s each, and between fifty and sixty shares were taken up that evening. A suggestion that the new club joined a local league for the coming season was not popular, however, as it was thought that it did not show confidence in the future of the club, a subsequent application to join the Midland League for the coming season was successful and over 4,000 supporters turned up to watch the first home match. A reserve side was formed by the beginning of the 1934/5 season, and this played in the Peterborough and District League. The present day 'Posh; had been born. (Peterborough Citizen)
