Firefighting Competition

1934: It is recorded that over 4,000 people gathered at the London Road ground on this holiday Monday to watch the annual competitions held by the North Eastern District of the National Fire Brigades' Association. For nearly fifty years, Peterborough had benefited from two fire brigades - the Volunteer and City forces. Rivalry was intense as regards emergency calls, and it was raised a notch or two more in this challenging environment. The Trailer Pump competition trophy had been held by the City force for the past two years but this time, in a very close-run thing, they had to bow to the Volunteers, who beat them into second place.
