Anti-German Feeling
Information
1915: Nine months after earlier anti-German troubles, Frank's Butchers in Westgate - a long-established family in Peterborough, but of German extraction - were again targeted by troublemakers. Just after 9 p.m. a crowd, mainly of soldiers, gathered outside their shop; more people soon joined them and before long, a volley of stones shattered the windows. The police and military arrived; the mayor appealed to the crowd to act with traditional justice and by 11 p.m. the streets were quiet, the crowds having dispersed and the soldiers returned to their billets. The damage was valued at £30 and was charged to the Peterborough Ratepayers' account. (Gray, David, Peterborough at War 1914-1918, David Gray, 2014)
