Information
1950: Runaway loco engines are dangerous, and the New England depot had recently experienced two runaway incidents. As a result, stringent security measures had been put into force at the depot. The Western Morning News reported on this day that a third such incident had nearly occurred there when a Green Arrow-type express locomotive, in the process of raising steam, was found to have a regulator open, the reversing lever in gear, and the cylinder waste-cock shut. The new measures brought the situation to light. Without this check, when a sufficient head of steam had been raised, the engine would probably have moved off with danger to life and limb.
