1877: Today's Stamford Mercury has the following two 'news' stories. Under the heading 'Reconciliation' we learn the following:
"A few mornings back the London correspondent of the Nottingham Daily Journal bore witness to the astounding and fearful fact that Mr Whalley (Peterborough's MP) and Dr Kenealy had been warmly 'liquoring up' together at the bar of the House of Commons. Can this be true? If so, the nations of the earth may well tremble in the face of such a reunion of irrepressible dual power. 'To your tents ye children of Tichbornia: for the rulers of the strong hosts have become as one through the inspired fumes of B and S.' The man of melody and many sorrows has found once again his loving counterpart in the burley Chartist of dew drop moistened mane, and a rattle as of dry bones is heard as a sign of battle in the valley of despair."
Immediately below this we learn that there had been a considerable attendance of district agriculturists at the annual sheep-shearing and engine drivers' competition held at Boroughbury Barn. We are also informed that the contest in both the departments was well sustained. We don't get news like this now!
