George V Proclaimed King
Information
1910: On the day Londoners could watch the actual proclamation of King George V, following the death of his father King Edward VII, Peterborough ensured the great day did not pass the good people of the city by. The Market Place - now Cathedral Square - became the focal point. An impressive podium was set up in front of the Guildhall for the dignitaries of the city. In front of them formed a military guard of honour, accompanied by choristers to sing the praises of the new king. They were supported by three buglers. The rest of the Market Place and the upper floors of the Greyhound and Bell & Oak public houses were packed with loyal members of the Peterborough public.(Bull, J. and V., Peterborough - a portrait in old picture postcards, S.B.
